CECA Quick Guide to

UTC Network Install

12/97

Introduction: This document is for UTC Network Services personnel. The simplest is always the best. This document assumes that you have managed an Ethernet connection to UTCs network and covers only the basics of an install. Installs can be far more complicated and frustrating than what is detailed here. As the network grew we came to use a standard install for all the network installs. No IP configuration is needed if you are going to use DHCP (which is default for Windows/Mac.). Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Macintosh installs vary somewhat, but they all have the following components:

Browser - Netscape 2.0

Telnet - NCSA (Mac), QWTerm (Windows)

Email - Eudora

All of the installs are done using UTC_SRV1 with the user ID of "installer". I won’t show the password here as you can never be sure to who will read this. Anyway we have made the installs as automated as possible. Windows installs (both kinds) use batch files and the Mac install is just drag and drop. Before I go into specifics for each install, I want to list a few numbers that are important. (This numbers are provide automatically when using DHCP.)

Router/Gateway - This number is always xxx.xxx.xxx.1 of the IP address you are going to assign to a machine. I.E. 199.76.195.22 would use gateway/router 199.76.195.1

Subnet Mask - Without going into specifics, this determines how a network range is divided.

255.255.224.0 - Use this number in 605 Oak St. (Development Old Chancellor house)

255.255.255.0 - Use everywhere else.

DNS Servers - Enter these numbers in this order

192.239.44.6

192.239.44.7

199.76.195.221

199.76.195.203

SMTP Server - This handles forwarding of email

192.239.44.6

Before you begin

Preparation is more than 1/2 the battle. You should have the following things before you begin an install.

Network Install Disk (for DOS) - NUMBER ONE IMPORTANT

Windows 95 CD - NUMBER ONE IMPORTANT for 95

Screwdriver - Phillips and Flat Head

Ethernet Disk for Ethernet Card - Make sure you have the newest version from ftp.3com.com as you may have to disable plug n play. User may have the disk.

IP number - You should get this from the white notebook or from Jerry.

When you get to the install sight, make backups of both the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS on each machine.

Windows 3.1 Installs

1. Using the DOS net install disk (install a:) you should have, install the drivers on the C: of the PC. The install disk will create a net directory. Change into the net directory and edit the net.bat. You will have to modify the parameters depending upon which type of Ethernet card used. The following is an example of a 3com card driver.

3c5x9pd -n 0x60

ipx

netx ps=utc_srv1

winpkt 0x60

This batch file loads the packet driver, ipx, netx and winpkt. The packet driver provides an interface with the card, IPX is the protocol that novell requires, NETX is a program that maps IPX connections to DOS drives (F:), and finally winpkt allows Win31 to have a winsock (TCPIP) connection.

2. Run net.bat to make sure that it works. You should get an attachment to SRV1. Type F: and return. You should get the f:\login> prompt. If you do, go to step 3. Assuming you don’t get an f: prompt, edit the CONFIG.SYS file and see if it has a last drive statement. IF it has one, change it to lastdrive=e. Make sure that you are using the correct packet driver for the card. After you have made these changes, reboot the PC and try again.

3. Edit the autoexec.bat and add the line:

call c:\net\net.bat

which will call the net drivers when the PC boots.

4. At the f:\login> type

login installer

and enter the password. After that type :

map g:=utc_srv1/vol2:

which will make g: the installer directory.

5. Change to G: and then cd into the install directory. When you are in the install directory type:

go

This will run the batch file that installs all of the internet software. The batch file will invoke windows and then run several installers. Netscape and QWTerm will ask where to install the program, use the netapp directory like:

c:\netapp\netscape and c:\netapp\qwterm

6. After the installer finishes, you should restart Windows (or the whole PC if you want) and they try to run one of the internet apps such as Netscape. You will be prompted with a Trumpet Winsock window asking for specific IP numbers. Enter them and then close Winsock. Netscape will fail, but thats OK. Close Netscape and try starting it again. If all is well, Netscape will work correctly. If you have problems, check the configuration of Winsock using the numbers above.

Windows 95 Install

Probably the most important thing to have is the Windows 95 CD. It has drivers for most of the Ethernet cards in use today. At UTC we try to stick with 3com drivers.

1. If your lucky 95 already knows about the Ethernet card. Open the Network control panel and see if it is installed. If you don’t see an Ethernet adapter or if you have just put it in the PC try running the Add new hardware control panel and see if 95 detects the card. You may have to add it manually. You will have to know the IRQ and MEM IO (like 10 and 300). If you don’t know these numbers, boot the PC in DOS mode and use the Ethernet configuration program (found on the specific Ethernet disk) to find out these numbers. After you have the card added go to step 2.

2. Using the network control panel, add the following things:

Client for Microsoft Networks (Remove unless user wants it for peer to peer)

Client for Novell Networks

TCPIP protocol

3. Configure the TCPIP protocol by double clicking on it. Fill in the numbers as required for IP, DNS, Gateway etc. Set it to Windows Login or Novell Login, whichever the user wants.

4. Close the Network Control Panel, Windows 95 will have to restart. After Windows restarts proceed to step 5.

5. Open up Network Neighborhood and find UTC_SRV1. Double click on it and login as installer.

6. Open SRV1 and then VOL2. Change into the INSTALL directory and finally into the WIN95 directory. Within that directory you will find an INSTALL.BAT. Double-click on it. This will run the batch file that installs all of the internet software. The batch file will invoke windows and then run several installers. Netscape will ask where to install the program, use the netapp directory like:

c:\netapp\netscape

7. If everything has been configured correctly, Netscape should run correctly.

Macintosh Installs

After you have made sure that the Mac has a network connection, follow these steps to install the Mac software.

1. Check to see if MacTCP or TCPIP Control Panels Exist. If they do, open them and configure them with the correct numbers.

2. Check the Network or Appletalk Control Panel. Make sure it is set to Ethernet.

3. Open the Chooser and click on AppleShare. You should see a bunch of zones, select the one called UTC CECA Netframe. Double Click on UTC_SRV1 and login as installer.

4. You will be asked which drives you want, select VOL2. You should see a new file server on the desktop.

5. Open up the file server and find the MAC folder within the INSTALL folder. You should find a folder inside it called Network Utilities. Drag the Network Utilities folder to the hard drive of the Mac.

6. Once the copy is finished, restart the Mac. After the Mac starts, and assuming you have all the number right, you should be able to run Netscape (inside the Network Utilities folder.)
