I suggest that you use the latest browser your PC
or
Mac
will support. Also

UTC Developments
Slug's Web Pages - Slug's main web
page has been changed to hopefully improve usability. I have
also created
new pages dealing with Macs,
Win NT, Win95-98,
and Linux. Each new
page contains suggested software with
hyperlinks. Slug now also has a search
page for his web pages.
MacOS X - Apple's newest operating system, MacOS X Server, has
been installed and is currently being tested at
CECA. The OS is built on a Mach kernel (UNIX clone) with a NextStep
like GUI. Currently is it only acting as
a Quicktime Streaming Server, but plans to implement NetBoot are in
the works. The new server is named
Zoomer, and you can get more
info on MacOSX here. Slug
now also has a small archive
of MacOSX applications.
Slug's DNS service is corrected - For the longest time I thought
I had Slug's DNS service configured correctly.
Well it wasn't, but that has been fixed. Slug is now a "slave"
or "secondary" DNS server that gets its
information from CECASUN's zone files. Slug gets periodic copies
from CECASUN and you can use his
IP for a secondary (or primary) DNS entry. If you are using
DHCP or dont know what Im talking about, than
ignore this paragraph.
Slug's Suggestions
If your using Norton AntiVirus 5.0 for Windows (any flavor) you can
set up your LiveUpdate to get its updates
from Dewey. Dewey is the main WinNT server for ICSS (helpdesk)
and acts as alive update server. Just put
dewey.icss.utc.edu in as the server address, and schedule it.
Dewey is kept up to date. If you dont have NAV5,
or any other form of anti-virus, call the Help Desk at 4000 and ask
for it. Dewey can also push updates for Mac
users of NAV5, but it requires AppleTalk. Of course, this months
updates are on Slug for Mac
and Windows.
Apple has released a preview version of Quicktime 4. This version
has a new look and the ability to play more
formats. Quicktime
4 is set to be the basis of MPEG2, the new version of av compression.
Media Player is gone, replaced
with Quicktime player. The player can update itself when a new
media format is encountered. I like the new look, but the
graphic equalizer can't be adjusted, maybe it will be when it is officially
released. The player also can handle
Quicktime Streaming. Have a look at zoomer,
a MacOS X server.
If you are using a new G3 Mac (not iMac or PBs) , than you should download the latest firmware update. It improves speed and reliability.
FinderPop, a great addition to MacOS 8.x, has a new version (1.8) that improves compatibility and adds a few new features.
This months update for Norton AV is on Slug for Mac .
If you didnt look at the Mac section, you should know that Apple has
released a preview of its Quicktime
4. This version looks similiar
Winamp, and can play MPEG1 layer 3 (MP3) audio files. The final
version will also have changable "skin" support.
I found a new, good freeware image viewer, converter, thumbnailer named Iview. Its not very big, but has many features.
For you NT administrators, check out these new free applications Config
Wizard and Service
Manager. If you have admin rights
to your Domain, these will make parts of your job easier, especially
Config Wizard. You can do/set/change many registry entries
remotely.....You should try it...
Get your Norton AV update for all flavors of Windows.
