Welcome to the new year, hopefully your holiday vacation went well. Slug, along with the rest of UTC's silicon based life forms, survived Y2K without a hitch. As far as I know there were no Y2K glitches. I created SlugTech 24 using Word 2000 and its HTML export function. While it looked good to Internet Explorer, its HTML source was a nightmare of style sheet tags and who knows what else. I wont repeat that experiment. If you've viewed the last dozen or so SlugTechs you might have noticed a varying style which I hope to finalize in this SlugTech.
SlugTech Requirements - Software that you should have.
Decompressing Utility. Ezzip for Windows or Aladdin Expander for Mac.
Slug's News
Slug's improved ftp search. You can now search Slug's FTP site on two words, give it a try. Slug's links now use this search instead of hard links to each file.
CECA's Microsoft's TechNet available to Campus. Plans are in the works to provide access to the TechNet resources available on CD-ROM for the entire campus. Currently less than 20 people have accounts on the NT server where TechNet lives. The new server will be Linux (surprise?) running Samba. Anyone with a DNS name ending in utc.edu should be able to mount these shares remotely.
Webmail Upgrade. Webmail will be upgraded from version 3.51 to 3.6 on Friday the 21st of January between 9-10am. Normal operation should resume at 10am.
New CECASUN on the way. A new Sun computer has been ordered and should be delivered this month. Hopefully if all goes well it will become the new CECASUN within a few months.
New DHCP/DNS service. Networking Services will soon take over the management of UTC's DNS (domain name service) and incorporate that with a new DHCP scheme. This will allow all DHCP (that's how your PC gets its Internet address) assigned Internet Addresses to have a valid DNS (aka .dhcp.utc.edu or something similar) entry.
CECA testing Windows 2000. CECA is currently exploring Windows 2000 and its Active Directory. So far the major limitation seems to be hardware requirement as its server version wants at least 256Mb of RAM.
Macintosh Updates
GrayAmp - A great freeware MP3 player has been updated.
FinderPop - Finderpop is a contextual menu enhancement that I highly recommend. This one adds OS9 compliance.
Iomega Drivers - Update the drivers for your Mac Zip Drive.
SmartZip - A new Mac program for dealing with Zip archives (compression format.)
CodeWarriorLight - Have you ever wanted to do C programming on your Mac?
Open Transport Update 2.6 for MacOS 8.5 and 9.
Older System and Printer files. After raiding the Helpdesk's Software resources I found several older Laserwriter drivers and Systems. Youll just have to browse through Slug's ftp site if your looking for something in particular.
Windows Updates
Xnview - Maybe the best freeware graphic viewer available.
Wordtabs - My new favorite Notepad replacement. I used to really like the Programmersedit, but it didnt seem to like some long file names.
Old HP printer drivers - Slug now has a variety of HP printer drivers.
Linux Updates
Gxtar - Similar to Winzip for Windows. Has more functionality than Ark and seems to work better in my opinion.
Alien - Convert between RPM and DEB packages, extract individual files from RPMs etc.
IBM-JDK - IBM's java, works well with Staroffice, but should be installed before Staroffice.
Limo - ls replacement with many new features.
IglooFTP-PRO - The best FTP client for Linux.
Gladiator - Looks to be a great film in the Braveheart tradition.
Mission Impossible 2 - Tom Criuse directed by John Woo......I hope this one is better than the first.
Final Destination - Forsight keeps death away only for a little while.
Holy Smoke - Harvey Kitel (sp?) tries to bring an american girl back to the american way.
Battlefield Earth - John Travolta brings the L.Ron Hubbard story to the screen.
Next Best Thing - Maddona tries it again in the movies.
RugRats in Paris - A new rugrats movie.
Patriot - Speaking of Braveheart, Mel Gibson in a Last of the Mohicans meets Bravehart.
